With deep knowledge, thinking can penetrate beyond surface structure. Once you have clarified that aim for yourself you should use it as the starting point in all future situations requiring thought and, possibly, further decision making. The elements needing consideration are generally numerous and varied. In layperson's terms, critical thinking consists of seeing both sides of an issue, being open to new evidence that disconfirms your ideas, reasoning dispassionately, demanding that claims be backed by evidence, deducing and inferring conclusions from available facts, solving problems, and so forth. This body of studies has been summarized simply: Children are not as dumb as you might think, and adults (even trained scientists) are not as smart as you might think. In the introduction, I mentioned that you can teach students maxims about how they ought to think. Why is thinking critically so hard? In many cases, consideration of one element from a different perspective will reveal potential dangers in pursuing our decision. Critical thinking is thinking about things in certain ways so as to arrive at the best possible solution in the circumstances that the thinker is aware. And yet, young children are sometimes able to reason about conditional probabilities. Specifically we need to be able to: Think about a topic or issue in an objective and critical way. The College Board recently revamped the SAT to better assess students' critical thinking and ACT, Inc.
